Callagy Wealth Management and Financial Planning is a small boutique firm that helps clients reach predetermined goals. We build portfolios and write financial plans. The portfolios are mostly built with ETF's but not exclusively and the financial planning software used is Right Capital (www.rightcapital.com).
I’ve been a Financial Advisor for 28 years and run my wealth management firm as a solo practitioner and use LPL as my partner for both my Broker Dealer and Registered Investment Advisor (RIA). A little bit more about me….
Originally from Bethesda Maryland. Graduated from Walter Johnson HS and then University of Maryland (1987) with a degree in in Geography with a specialty in cartography or map making.
My first job after college was on a government research ship with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admin NOAA (www.noaa.gov/charting). After graduating from the NOAA officer training school and becoming an Ensign, I received my first assignment in the Gulf of Mexico charting the ocean floor. The project used side scan sonar to collect the depths and send the information back to the home office in Rockville Maryland to make nautical charts. My ship, the NOAA ship MT Mitchell, pulled into Tampa Bay in 1989 and I fell in love with the Tampa Area and never left.
My initial exposure to the financial markets came in the mid 90’s when I receive a small inheritance. In less than a year I had turned my account from 13k to 130k and I was hooked. Of course, it was easy back then, due the tech bubble of the late 90s. I thought I was a genius, turns out not. But I did discover a love for trading stocks. Mostly tech stocks.
After the tech bubble bust of 2001, and after giving back all my gains, I then realized I needed to go to business school. It was during my graduate program (MBA/Finance Keller Graduate School of Mgmt. 2003), I was exposed to various career paths within financial services, specifically the CFA-Chartered Financial Analysis program (www.cfainstitute.org) and the CFP Certified Financial Planner program (www.cfp.net). There seemed to be overlap in the two curriculums.
Recently, I’ve been interested in the "technical" side of the market which lead me to the CMT Chartered Market Technician association (www.cmtassociation.com). This program helps to understand the financial markets with a technical lens and with a heavy use of charts and sentiment. ETFs and index investing has become popular of late. Charles Dow, who created the Wall Street Journal as well as the first indexing system in the late 1890's. also created Dow Theory. Dow compared a group of industrial stocks to see what was being built to a group of transportation stocks to see what was being shipped. He looked at the Dow Industrials vs Dow Transports to confirm economic growth and direction of a trend. I use trend analysis in much of the work I do.
LPL research publishes a Strategic Asset Allocation model which uses longer term (3-5yr) drivers such as valuations and fundamentals. Also, Tactical Asset Allocation model which uses shorter (3-12 month) drivers using more technicals and sentiment. From these I help guide clients into five general categories: Aggressive Growth, Growth, Growth with Income, Income with Moderate Grow and Income with Capital Preservation. In addition, I have access to Blackrock's Aladdin software (www.blackrock.com/aladdin) for help with portfolio construction.
So you see, I feel I’ve come full circle… from charting the Gulf of Mexico to charting the stock, market, it’s been quite a journey. I’d like to hear your story. I’m a good listener.
In my practice I partner with CFP teammates within the LPL financial planning group for case design. For portfolio construction, I partner with CFA and CMT's inside of LPL Research. I also use third party research for market direction and commentary.
I’ve been a Financial Advisor through three large market corrections. The tech bubble of 2000-2001. The great recession 2008-2009. The covid crash of 2020. I have seen raging bull markets and sharp pull backs. Ask me about my process.
